Here’s What I Have Learned About Transformation

S+coffee3

I have come to realize that transformation is hard, but necessary.

I am more convinced than ever that change is happening faster than we can imagine – in technology, business, politics, and in culture. If leaders do not transform their organizations, they will die.

But, here is a bigger lesson I have learned.

Leader who lead their organizations through transformation must first undergo transformation themselves. My father-in-law told me, “If I wanted my kids to change, I needed to change first.” Wise words that hold true in every area of life and society.

Speaking of transformation, I have experienced some of my own recently.

After working at Visioneering Studios for three and half years, most recently as VP of Strategic Design, it was time for me to move on. I am now embarking on the vision of helping visionaries redesign the future…a future for themselves, their organizations, and even society. This vision includes launching a transformation design firm that is part management consulting firm and part design studio in the next couple of years. Until then, I am consulting with organizations for brand strategy, design strategy, and strategic design along with other firms like Ideation Consultancy.

But, here’s what I didn’t count on…

If I want to help help visionaries transform themselves so that they could transform their organizations, I need to undergo the same type of transformation. That is what has happened in the last several months. Words like soul-searching and transition are never fun to live out, but they are indeed life-changing.

Here are some conversations and ideas about transformation that I have explored:.

  • In this podcast episode, I talked to Scott D. Anthony, Managing Principal of Innosight, about how dual transformation repositions today & creates the future.
  • In this blog post, I explored how it’s time to move beyond a consumer-based approach to experiences into the transformation experience economy.
  • In their book, Illuminate, Nancy Duarte and Patti Sanchez of Duarte, Inc. shares how to ‘ignite change through speeches, stories, ceremonies, and symbols’.

I am fascinated by topic of transformation especially when it is empowered by story and design. If you have any insights that you can share about your own journeys of trasnformation, please feel free to reach out to me on LinkedIn, hit me up at [email protected] or call me at 562-972-1024.

If you’re interested, I’ve even updated my website to fit on one page…almost, so feel free to check it out. It’s simpler and cleaner than it has ever been. I look forward to connecting.

Let’s redesign the future….together!

Steven
